Scholar Application Information
Freedom School is a six week, literacy-based summer program. Freedom School encourages a love of reading and learning through a culturally diverse curriculum.
The Integrated Reading Curriculum affirms our scholars with engaging literature and exposure to the broader community. We hire college-aged students to teach and mentor our scholars in classrooms with a 1:10 teacher to student ratio. During the six weeks, we encourage families of our scholars to be engaged in their child’s learning through family engagement nights and volunteer opportunities through out the summer.
Priority applications for returning scholars will be accepted beginning in February. All new scholar candidate applications will be accepted beginning in March.
We serve children who are currently in Kindergarten through 8th grade at multiple locations around Charlotte. Each one of our Freedom School sites serves a particular school or community area. If your child attends one of the schools or lives in one of the communities that we serve, they may be eligible to apply to attend Freedom School.
Applications for Freedom School are accepted beginning in February for returning families. Children who maintain their eligibility are invited to apply first. New scholar applications are accepted beginning in March.
Although we welcome applications from those who are eligible, not all candidates are able to attend the Freedom School program. Please note, that submitting an application does not guarantee a spot for your child in the Freedom School program.
